Recommendations not always be right fit food review Reality of Japanese A5 Wagyu beef

Is Japanese A5 Wagyu Really Worth It?Let’s talk about the truth behind Japanese A5 Wagyu. Often hailed as the pinnacle of culinary excellence, it’s a symbol of luxury and flavor, whether served in high-end restaurants or cooked at home. But after trying it myself, I’ve come to a different conclusion: What’s praised by others as “must-try” isn’t necessarily “right for me.”

Surprises and Grease: A Mixed Experience

A few weeks ago, I decided to film a video featuring A5 Wagyu. I purchased a small, thin piece of Wagyu on sale, which still cost an eye-watering 1,600 TWD! Brimming with anticipation, I hoped to finally experience this legendary beef.

That evening, I pan-seared the Wagyu to medium doneness, expecting an unparalleled taste sensation. The first bite was indeed impressive, the second bite still enjoyable, but by the third bite, the overwhelming greasiness took over. My mouth felt saturated with fat, and we found ourselves literally “draining oil” from the meat to make it edible.

A Family Affair Turned Awkward

That night, four of us shared this “luxurious taste test,” but strangely, no one managed to finish their portion. Grandma refused to touch it. I gave up after a few bites, and even my parents, who initially seemed intrigued, soon admitted it was “too greasy to eat.”

The 1,600 TWD A5 Wagyu became a running joke in our family—“Who’s brave enough to eat more of it?”

From Filet to A5 Wagyu: A Culinary Leap Too Far

Our family typically enjoys filet steaks, known for being lean and virtually fat-free. Jumping straight from filet to the world’s fattiest steak—A5 Wagyu—felt like a ridiculous leap. It was like skipping levels in a game, only to face a boss that overwhelmed us.

What Works for Others May Not Work for You

This Wagyu experience taught me a valuable lesson: Don’t blindly follow others’ preferences. Wagyu is often hyped as a must-try delicacy, but personal tastes and needs vary. Just like an iPhone might be praised as the best phone, you should consider whether you really need its features or if it’s just the hype influencing your decision.

Final Reflections

This might have been a once-in-a-lifetime Wagyu experience for me—and likely the last—unless it comes as part of a set meal in the future. For our family, filet steak, lean and flavorful, is much more suitable.

This experience reinforced my belief that whether it’s food or life decisions, it’s essential to listen, observe, and ultimately decide for yourself. What’s “great” for others isn’t always what’s best for you.
