What Kind of Military Training is This? Taiwan Military Diary!
This reflects the true Taiwanese spirit – wanting the horse to run fast while not feeding it well. The budget is not increased, yet everyone is expected to resist the Chinese military threat. These are my observations of the current state of the military. The text part records the key events of each day during my military service. You can ask AI to summarize the key points or, if you want to see more of my interesting analysis, you can watch the video playlist below.

12/1
Breakfast with two buns containing lots of additives and chemicals. Sweeping fallen leaves – with a leaf blower, it takes two blasts, but we take an hour to cover the same area. Got assigned to clean the restrooms at the activity center because today’s the celebration event and many officers are coming. I'm responsible for the officers' restroom – drying wet floors and emptying trash bins. Break time is in a small, dark room with no space to sit down, so I maintain a weird posture while using my phone. Ate two lunch boxes, rare to get full. Got time off until 2 PM for cleaning the restroom, but no one informed me, so I diligently finished the Juguang class.
20 roaches on plates for the grandpas to eat. Didn’t see anything from the event. The grandpas and high-ranking officers have no manners – trash everywhere, wasted food, many untouched meal boxes thrown away, no sorting of garbage, unfinished drinks just discarded. Cleaned the laundry room in the evening. The previous duty officer was a mess, bad handover – restroom, bathroom, recycling, and meal duties rotated among three of us. If the handover is not done well, we have to keep cleaning before we can shower, super exhausting. The squad leader is also helpless.
12/2
Someone cleaned the general trash in the morning, all maggots, heard it was super disgusting. Luckily, I wasn’t assigned to help. Snatched two buns in the morning, rainy day requires wearing a lot – T-shirt, camouflage clothes, camouflage jacket, and raincoat. It’s suffocating. Moving tables and chairs as a public duty. Being led by the right squad leader feels heavenly, while the wrong one means no rest, doing lots of stupid tasks. After lunch, waited for a 12 PM leave, a scam – the company commander said 12 but wasn't on time, lower officers wasted our leave time, even had to look at death photos. Didn’t leave until 12:30. One moment we need to buy armbands, next we don’t, then suddenly need to buy again, and finally, we don’t – unclear policies. A vehicle squeezed in 13 people, packed tight.
12/4
Light rain, happy chatting, went to bed on time.
12/5
Morning assembly in sportswear, threw me off as I’m used to sleeping in camouflage pants. Ate three buns for breakfast, then had to change back, very troublesome. Doing recycling, checked appearance – I wasn’t wearing a jacket. December requires everyone to wear jackets by force, very hot. Raining heavily, officers didn’t allow raincoats, put them on, rain lightened – annoying weather. Falsified document duty, happily using my phone, rare class on gas masks, antidote injectors, and disinfectant powder. No push-ups during rainy day exercises, playing badminton outdoors in Hsinchu, caught sneaking a second round of food at dinner. Watched Netflix movie in the evening.
12/6
Breakfast with delicious Chi Mei bamboo shoot pork buns, 16°C but still worried about heatstroke. Ice bucket challenge or trying to cause hypothermia? Basic training for 40 minutes, squad leader’s movements too slow, didn’t even get in line before it ended. Someone kept moving and got scolded. 180 cm tall, washed cars until soaked, pants and socks wet. Nap didn’t dry, had to change socks and insoles. Test time for gas mask, antidote injectors, and disinfectant tablets. Wind blew the basketball. Someone fell from the top bunk, only then did the officers install side bed rails. Missed the first batch for dinner, no more queuing for extra food – garbage military camp.
12/7
Three buns for breakfast, aiming for four tomorrow. Morning recycling, the recycling truck arrived two hours late after being towed. Chatted leisurely waiting for the garbage truck. Snatching food time, firearm training, frisbee exercises. Gym incident prevented workout, some cried. Dinner angered everyone; too many in our maintenance unit, company commander made us sit behind the second row. Next to us was the artillery unit with empty seats, yet they refused to let us sit and eat, kept driving us away, had to stand to eat, food insufficient. Some left without eating. Ate instant noodles at night. Someone in the camp died suddenly – super shocking.
12/8
Ate four sesame buns, overly sweet. Seven people crowded on one bed using phones. Light cleaning, then serious cleaning. Different squad leaders make a big difference, feeling exhausted, don’t want extra food anymore – the portions are just enough for inactivity, moving makes me starve. Afternoon had useless team activities, only as cheerleaders. Our unit heckled, hilarious, but delayed our meal time. Too tired to queue for extra food, five minutes to eat before the first batch had to shower. Showered in a rundown bathroom, weak water flow, fluctuating temperature – seems intended to make us sick. Ate instant noodles. Ordered 1500 TWD of Bafang Yunji dumplings, everyone starving, abandoned the cafeteria food.
12/9
Ate four meat buns, assigned to disgusting trash duty – four carts of smelly, oozing garbage, full of bugs, no sorting. Returned with no break, immediately assembled, happy gun maintenance while using phones, cautious to avoid getting caught. Wore raincoat for rain, sun came out instantly, cursed weather. Many skipped the cafeteria meal, eager for leave. Still got delayed, left the camp at 12:30.
12/11
Brought beef tendon instant noodles and two boxes of chocolates. Listened to music until 9 PM, happily slept. At 11 PM, someone talked in their sleep, hilarious – everyone heard it.
12/12
Ate four buns in the morning, those behind me got none. Passed the drug test for marijuana, dodged a bullet. Basic training like idiots, chatting while holding brooms. An older trainee collapsed, got sent away. Got caught sneaking a second round of lunch but continued anyway. Cold weather made it easy to sleep. CPR practice, everyone using phones got scolded. A crazy squad leader yelled constantly, made everyone line up repeatedly. Foot-injury sentinel with no officer, we got abandoned. No one guided us to and from meals. Ordered extra dinner but no food left, everyone ordered takeout or ate instant noodles. Only cold water for showers, no hot water – everyone complained. Showered in 16°C, extremely refreshing but miserable. Luckily, I finished early.
12/13
Wanted a fifth bun but ran out. Morning dorm cleaning turned into a snack party. Threw trash over to the artillery unit, hilarious. Poked holes in the wall, grabbed drinks from the supply room. CPR and AED practice, dealing with wall mold. Someone played with a lighter, igniting fuel on their hand – super funny. Big spider in the dorm, couldn’t find it. Fun frisbee exercises. Rarely ate a full dinner, leftover chicken legs. Showering was hell, 15°C cold water – felt suicidal. Finished, it started raining heavily.
12/14
Freezing 13°C morning, huddled like penguins, ran to queue after the whistle. Military is boring, emphasizes appearance – cold necks make no sense. Ate five buns for breakfast, felt great. Boring basic training, short and made the officer happy. Painting time – newspaper laydown was brainless, paint splattered everywhere, pointless. Pretended to lay newspaper properly. Squad leader found my YouTube channel, saw my complaints about military life. Cleaning tools are junk – some broken, some just heads. Hard to clean properly. Yesterday’s cold shower didn’t clean well, head itchy. Lunch was all fried food, very unhealthy. Grabbed four 1-liter drinks, refreshing. Physical test duty, helped with 1-2-3-4 and traffic control. Dinner squad leader dragged us around, called roll repeatedly, took forever. Showered quickly, cold and hot water alternated, chaotic. Company commander’s promises never match reality – typical public unit behavior.
12/15
Woke 30 minutes early, breakfast was red bean buns, disappointing. Guard duty chat for 1.5 hours, nice older trainee kept me company. Checked the ammo storage, looked like a warehouse with stacked goods. Signing in, wearing a raincoat was surprisingly warm. Falsified document duty, football betting time. Noon earthquake made everyone think someone climbed into bed, shaking. New officer’s class only had three rules – no returning to the dorms. Thought it was phone time but got named by the bottom-bunk squad leader, petty. Helped assemble a basketball hoop, heavy, then got shooed away by badminton players – why not assemble during duty time? Annoying. Helped but got criticized, dragged into meal time. Dinner added a meat patty, lots of vegetables. Showered, water fluctuated, unbearable. Quietly showered first. Gathered at 7 PM, pretended to let us off early then retracted privileges, very frustrating.
12/16
Morning assembly, the duty officer went missing, wasted time searching for him. No buns for breakfast, no porridge either – inconsistent meals. Many bought breakfast from the hot food department. Morning gun maintenance, indoor then outdoor on slippery ground, confusing instructions. Scrolled phone till noon. Someone fell asleep on a stool, toppled over, everyone laughed. Lunch had plenty of chicken legs, surprising. Afternoon happy cleaning, everyone shared stories, like storytime. Delayed dismissal, taxi driver complained, scrolled phone all the way to Taipei.
12/18
Cold weather below 10°C, everyone excited. Many had instant noodles for supper. Buns and porridge breakfast, brisk pace. Morning phone time. A group got punished for returning to the dorm early, but they only played with the basketball hoop – unfair. Painted chairs in the dark, hilarious. Painting is unplanned and messy. Complained to the company commander, started 200 push-ups, two minutes. The fat officer yelled at everyone to lie face down, star jumps in the rain, claimed it's for appearance, super tiring. Weak water for shower, freezing. Dinner queued early for five dishes, no dessert – typical military efficiency.
12/19
Rainy day assembly, cold but not unbearable. Breakfast had meat, chicken. Morning gun maintenance, a confusing mess. Checked appearance, wore raincoats, then promptly sun came out – annoying. Rumors of a new rule, civilians replacing laundry duty, only trusted when it happens. Assigned to trash duty again, disgustingly smelly, quickly done. Waiting for afternoon duty to end, excited for dismissal.
12/20
In the morning, I got called for an errand to move ice buckets, which made me miss out on having meat buns for breakfast. Exhausted from basic training, I continued with endless rotations and then painted. We started violently painting without any newspapers to catch the splatters, resulting in paint everywhere. In the end, everyone had to scrub the floor. Lunch was another disaster with no food available. The weather turned scorching hot. One evil squad leader went for training and wouldn't return, which made everyone extremely happy. The trash duty was awful, filled with ancient junk from over a decade ago, and we had to pick up garbage from 5 meters high among thorny branches. During the exercise, we were targeted and forced to run far distances while others played ball games. We pretended to be too tired to run and got to rest instead. We sneakily grabbed a second dinner. At night, we finally had hot water for a bath, which felt like a luxury. Someone got discharged, which made everyone happy.
12/21
The morning was spent cleaning the paint off the floor using scrapers, resulting in us wrecking the barracks, breaking the tiles, and chopping down nearby trees and plants like lumberjacks. We delayed both going to and leaving the canteen, constantly being messed with. At noon, I suddenly found out I had guard duty. I queued up, making the squad leader question why there was an extra person, and happily went to stand guard. After duty, I relaxed with the caretakers, scrolling on my phone while others ran 3,000-4,000 meters outside. At dinner, someone bet on asking the commander for the juice on his table, and someone actually did it. The juice tasted awful, like water, and the news quickly spread through the company. In the back dorm, a fat guy was too loud, leading some people to move to the front dorm. Several more people got discharged, making us all eager to leave.
12/22
The military can't even afford trash bags and has to save on them. Someone from another camp fell into a septic tank, got cut, and ended up in the ER. These military incidents never make the news. There were few people in basic training, making it a fun time, but we were still stuck cleaning paint. Everyone kept complaining about the sorry state of our repair company, with the mechanics unit being worse off. Other companies enjoyed pizza and drinks while we scrambled for scraps and barely ate. Others visiting our toilets commented on how rundown they were. While they had free canteen access, we still had to march in place during training. After yesterday’s orange juice incident, we finally got juice with lunch today. In the afternoon, we played badminton happily. Those with glasses needed to wear them next time. Dinner was basically leftovers, with every dish cold and insufficient. It seemed like the food had been eaten by others. Someone called the 1985 hotline, and 20 minutes later, the company commander scolded the squad leaders, but it was like a chicken talking to a duck, completely missing our issues. The deputy company commander came to chat officially with everyone in the evening, but we all shook our heads, not wanting to argue directly, so we just agreed to everything. Threats of banning leave if the 1985 hotline was called again ensued. Before bed, we vented about the officers, joking about beating them up. Someone almost got into a fight with the deputy company commander, but luckily he didn’t hear us.
12/23
For breakfast, there were either steamed buns or leftover buns from the day before. The morning was spent cleaning vehicles with tissues and staying alert while using our phones. Lunch was lavish with dumplings. The 1985 hotline proved useful. Some got leave at noon but were delayed until nearly 1 PM. In the afternoon, senior soldiers led us, letting us clean the dorm and relax until 3:30 PM when we were released. Good leaders can make things heavenly, while bad ones just make us do menial work.
12/25
Three bowls of instant noodles, lots of beef jerky, and free curry rice, though I was too full to eat it.
12/26
In the morning, I maintained my gun while using my phone, getting caught but not really punished. Winning rock-paper-scissors meant I could go back to using my phone. Tasked with transporting vegetables, we got caught slacking. No basic training or guard duty today. I returned at 9 AM and slacked until noon. Afternoon naps were until 2:30 PM. Fridays meant honorary leave at noon. Someone overslept and reported late, messing around. Tomorrow's basic training will be tough again. Someone's dorm exploded in mess, with mosquito nets, unmade beds, and shoes not put away. Afternoon maintenance had the deputy commander inspecting, scaring everyone. We ran laps, but I lay on the ground due to knee pain. Dinner meant extra chicken legs for me since someone didn't want theirs. Bathing led to loud yelling, heard by the entire company. The squad leader asked who was showering, and no one answered, so the shouting continued. I watched the commotion while enjoying a hot shower.
12/27
The new buns from Taiping Tong were inconsistent, with uneven filling distribution and varying spice levels, hence why they're military food. Morning basic training had a sleeping soldier who got called out for not opening his eyes. Gun maintenance almost put me to sleep. Lunch didn't allow us to choose the main dish, leading to food exchanges. Our squad had no officers, led by another squad's leader who rushed us to finish in 45 minutes, then complained we were too slow and made us march. Afternoon interrogations concluded it was a communication issue among officers. Evening meant rushing for showers before anyone else, avoiding crowds.
12/28
A female squad leader offered me extra buns in the morning, but I was already full after five. With no morning training, we happily cleaned, repaired the ceiling, and then stood at attention for 50 minutes after someone got caught not cleaning properly. Afternoon involved group discussions about dealing with the situation ourselves, as officers mishandled it. Following a troublesome soldier led to group punishments and complaints about officers’ false promises. We aimed to be the first to shower and clean guns before bed.
12/29
Breakfast included delicious rice dumplings. The commander’s monthly meeting was tedious and filled with complaints. I wanted to get a foot pain certificate but didn't know who to ask. Lunch was abundant with melon and chicken legs. Guard duty was enjoyable with chats, avoiding work. Hearing about an escapee caught on barbed wire led to stricter controls. We enjoyed playing catch and used another unit’s showers due to our lack of hot water.
12/30
Someone posted a long message in the group chat, resonating with many. Gun maintenance with many officers nearby made us pretend to work hard. Lunch was fine, and the rest of the day was spent cleaning and preparing to leave. I decided to stay for the hot pot and raffle, eating to my heart's content. The raffle seemed rigged, with big prizes going to the hosts. Government events seem to always be this way. Finally, the three-month summer camp ended with lots of sweeping.
1/2
Someone just got discharged from the military at the end of the year and posted a message in the group chat, sharing it with everyone. When I returned to the camp, the duty sergeant called me in for a chat. He wanted to talk because I didn't answer his calls while I was out photographing New Year's fireworks. He kept saying that if I just cooperated with him, things would be fine. Then he asked why I had such an artist's temperament. Who started calling me an artist in the first place? XD The comrades I usually served with, and even the sergeant who led us, called me an artist. Now even the duty officer calls me an artist, what's going on? XD Anyway, after some talking, he just told me to go back. Maybe it's because I'm about to be discharged, so he couldn't be bothered to deal with me.
1/3
The meal duty squad is cool. We get up early, serve ourselves as much as we want, can eat slowly, and gather late. There's extra rest time at noon. We had a moving detail, sorting through a lot of junk. I found a lot of masks and chopsticks, as well as jackets and pants from the volunteer soldiers. A senior invited me to eat egg pancakes at the hot meal station. It was my first time there. The ladies at the hot meal station were puzzled because they hadn't seen me before. Since I was about to be discharged, many sergeants chatted with us happily, sharing their thoughts. Everyone still lamented about the repair unit, filled with people who didn't know what they were doing, creating chaos. Most of these were higher-ranking officers, and no one could do anything about them. Those who knew what they were doing felt really unfortunate, because they didn't know what to do about the situation. At lunch, I served myself a huge amount and got super full. I also served everyone else a lot, making sure they had plenty to eat. But the good times didn't last. We had a ton of pots to wash, and I got bullied into handling two large soup barrels. Someone said it was coordinated by the company commander, but after checking, we only needed to handle half of it. The repair unit is always the most unfortunate. We washed pots for a whole hour, which was exhausting. In the afternoon, we chatted until exercise time. In the evening, I ate three main courses and served everyone extra portions. Despite this, we still had leftovers. Our unit had fewer people, but the food portions stayed the same. Everyone got full, but we had a ton of food waste, like 12 kilograms of vegetables and 6 kilograms of rice. It was such a waste. I wrote a report about the day's events because a sergeant wanted to know what I was doing during the weekend and why I didn't answer the phone. So, I just wrote a casual report, experiencing the fun of writing reports.
1/4
In the morning, I hurried to gather and stepped on the lower bunk sergeant's foot while getting breakfast. Then I immediately went to stand guard. After chatting with two people, I went to get breakfast again without any rest. After my shift, I was told that a political warfare officer was coming, so I had no rest time. In the end, he didn't show up. The officers were a mess. Luckily, at noon, I washed the meal barrels with three volunteer soldiers, which was super efficient. We finished in just 30 minutes. For my last guard shift, there was an athletic coach, a mechanic, an insurance agent, a PR person, and some who had no idea what they were doing but planned to travel abroad first. It was a great time for lazy chatting. In the afternoon, we took a walk, ate snacks, picked up trash, and turned our run into a walk because someone had a blood test and was afraid of fainting. At mealtime, the sergeant thought I wasn't on meal duty and told me to eat quickly and gather. Turns out he was wrong. I should have just sneaked off, avoiding washing 10+ meal barrels, 2 large soup barrels, wiping 100+ tables, and handling loads of 10+ kilograms of food waste. Morning and evening, we had to deal with ice buckets. After a relaxing 20-minute shower, our unit's water pump broke again. Taxpayers' money down the drain.
1/5
Mosquito nets with mosquitoes are so annoying. They bit my eyebrows, making them super itchy. Being on meal duty for a few days was great for eating my fill but really exhausting. Sometimes you really don't know what someone is doing until you do it yourself. This was true for meal duty in the past few months. Mornings started with basic training, which was funny. In our mechanical platoon, only I was left. It was cool, everyone was cheerful, doing attention and parade rest drills while singing songs. We had to sing while marching, but no one knew the songs well, not even the volunteer soldiers, which was hilarious. The duty sergeant awkwardly brushed it off. In the morning, we casually tidied up the dorm and internal affairs because an officer was coming to inspect. We were assigned score-recording detail, making our eyes blurry. For lunch, I wasn't originally on meal duty, but the sergeant asked me to help, promising extra rest until 2 PM. Six of us efficiently finished everything in 20 minutes. Doing more work should come with more benefits to encourage willingness. Some sergeants just keep making you work, cutting into your rest time, which is really bad. In the afternoon, we watched TV, chatted, returned all the gear, and happily received our discharge papers. We could have left, but we decided to stay for hotpot and the raffle. No regrets. The food was all-you-can-eat: roast chicken, hotpot meat slices, canned drinks, everything unlimited. There was a singing segment, where everyone held up their mobile phones in the dark. The raffle was totally rigged. The hosts, who were insiders, put back the tickets of people they didn't like. We didn't win any big prizes. Typical government unit, right? Ending this three-month cleaning summer camp.
The End
